NUESTRA PROVINCIA EN WaVE – Interreg Europe

Each month, one person from the WaVE partnership talks about their connection to water through photos.

For the month of December, Rafael García Berenguer, 4th ‘Deputy’ Mayor of the municipality of Mutxamel shares his connection to water-linked heritage.

– Assut de Sant Joan (River Monnegre) –

WHAT is represented?
The Assut Nou or Assut de Sant Joan was built in the 17th century and takes its name because it watered the orchard of the municipality of Sant Joan. It is a weir, a derivation dam that uses the water of avenues to distribute it through the network of ditches and irrigation canals. From this assut came the Gualeró canal that joined with the main one that came from the Mutxamel weir and reached the Condomina, the Consell or de la Mare canal.
This weir is part of the irrigation system of the Alicante orchard linked to the Tibi reservoir.

HOW does it make you feel?
It makes me feel small and big at the same time. Small due to the dimensions of the wall and the monumentality of the complex. Big because we can see how the human being who has inhabited these lands has used natural resources to make life possible and turn a very dry area into an orchard that today is fading in many aspects, but where there is still life. And if there is life, there is hope.

WHY did you choose it?
I chose this photo because you can see the entire dam and the casamata or government house. Moreover, I am also in the picture attending to a media to make it known and valued by neighbors and visitors.
It is a heritage with a great historical, ethnographic and natural value.
